Land Action added an event. Tue 1:30 PM · 3700 West St Oakland, CA

After Nine Years the forces of real estate speculation have sunk their claws into the collective garden at 3700 West Street which was co-founded by Steven DeCaprio the founder of Land Action. This garden was the inspiration and test site for Land Action's micro-farm campaign which has faced intense resistance by the City of Oakland, Alameda County, and their crony speculators culminating in the prosecution of the Land Action 4.
The eviction is currently slated for tomorrow. However, there is a slim chance the court will grant a stay that morning.
There is a 120 foot tiny home on the site and an orchard. We would like to remove as much as possible and appreciate your help. Work as much or as little as you like, but be aware the Sheriff may show up at any time to ruin the party.
After this work party we will go to the HERE/THERE camp at the corner of Adeline and MLK to show solidarity as they fight an eviction as well. More info on that later event is here: https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2017/10/22/18803820.php

Disappointing news today. The sheriff came this morning to our proof-of-concept collective micro-farm at 3700 West to evict and change the locks on the gate. The garden had been actively growing food and the small home happily habitated for close to a decade.
The parcel itself was one of Oakland's most tax encumbered properties with a bill of back taxes, liens and other fines owed adding up to ~$650k. But somehow, while we were told the county would not accept partial payment of back taxes when we went to pay the last 4 years owed, a private speculator at the tax auction was allowed to buy the parcel for a bid of $60k. Far shy of what they were trying to make us pay to save our micro-farm.
This is a new move for the county, letting tax defaulted property go at auction to private bidders for faaaar less than what is owed. 3700 West had been untouched at the tax auction for probably close to two decades. I feel this does not bode well for the practice of adverse possession in this county.
It's time to dig in deep at our other micro-farms and gardens!!!!
Juan one of the fig tree recipients.
